Addicted to carbohydrates?

Hey there sweets, how has the week been? Great i hope. I really hope you enjoy this topic. So, i have been getting a lot of complaints from people who are finding it difficult to cut down on carbs and some who are not even willing to try, yet they want to lose weight. Hmmm, well truth is, you cant keep eating what you eat and expect to see a difference.  This took me back to a book i read some months back: 'Healing by design' Written by: Dr. Scott Hannen. In it, he mentioned, another word for people highly addicted to carbohydrates is: a Carboholic.


According to Dr. Scott Hannen: in his book Healing by design
"A Carboholic is a person whose body craves starchy or sugary foods. From time to time, they find themselves eating too much for no good reason. No matter how much they want to control their eating, the urge for more overpowers them. At this time, it is as if they cant keep from over eating."

I agree with him, i used to be one myself. I totally know the feeling of being addicted to carbohydrates. (And oh when i say carbs i mean: Sugar, soda, white flour, pasta, white rice, etc) Addiction is addiction, be it in drugs, food, sex, alcohol etc. Too much of everything is bad.

 I remember those nights when: I got home from work, had dinner, put on a movie, got in bed and cozied up with a bottle of coke and some short bread biscuits and a bar of chocolate.... EVERY NIGHT!!! If i didn't have coke, i would have fruit juice or both. I couldn't go a week without eating rice almost every day. Then on Sunday, choi!!! I would load my lunch (I love Sunday rice o!) plate like it was my 'last supper'. I didn't have mercy on myself, i ate as my heart pleases. I was/am a happy eater (if there's anything like that) i eat more when i'm in a good mood. The only difference is that i am able to control myself now. I know when to stop.

Its not that carbohydrates generally are bad, but too much of it is, especially for people trying to lose weight  The body actually needs carbohydrate (energy) to function, the question here is: what kind and what quantity per day?  It depends on some factors: How active you are, how old you are, and if you want to lose weight. Carbohydrates should be consumed in moderation.

HOW MUCH CARBOHYDRATES DO I NEED PER DAY?

According to about.com:
A person who eats approximately 2,000 calories per day should take in about 250 grams of carbohydrates (2,000 divided by 2 = 1,000 and 1,000 divided by 4 = 250). Read more on that Here and learn how to count calories, and know how much you need per day here

EFFECTS OF EATING EXCESS CARBOHYDRATES:
  1. Weight gain.
  2. Constipation
  3. Mood swings (depression)
  4. Blood sugar hike (diabetes)
  5. Bloating and water retention
  6. Etc

If you are reading this and you find it hard giving up, i tell you its possible, you can do it. If I could get over it and change my lifestyle till today (no more excess carbs) then you can do it too. I am not saying don't eat carbohydrate rich foods anymore, i am saying:

 FIGHT THE URGE:
  1. Eat them in the right amount that your body needs per day. Moderation should be your watch word.
  2. Eat only when you are TRULY hungry.
  3. Eat complex carbs. Whole grain foods, veggies, beans etc. They take time to break down in the body. They keep you full for long and they don't hike your blood sugar(which is what makes you want to eat more carbs anyways)
  4. Exercise daily. Any form of exercise is good.
  5. Don't eat carbs so late at night. As the day draws to an end, limit your carbohydrate intake and drink water all the time to keep flushing you system.
  6. Get a low carb meal plan and work with it as a guide till you are able to control yourself the more.
  7. Get rid of foods that are bad for you and replace them with nutrient rich foods that your body will love. When you get hungry at night, eat a piece of fruit.
  8. Ask your friends and family to help you by encouraging you and not tempting you with things you don't need.
  9. Stick with a balanced diet.

EFFECTS OF A LOW CARB DIET;
  1. You start to shed some weight.
  2. Your skin will start to glow.
  3. You look younger.
  4. Your mood totally changes. You are happier.
  5. You sleep better.
  6. Better memory.
  7. etc
The benefits of going low on carbs generally are endless. You will be surprised how great you will feel in just after a week of reduced carbs.  I hope this explains it enough. See guys, we are all human, none of this is easy, but we have to push ourselves to get to where we want or where we need to be (for health reasons) Its all for the better.   2. Losing weight is a serious issue o, so you even had to read books because of this? uhmm, it is well.

    Well said Cheliz, one really needs to have control over the consumption of carbs. And as Nigerians we grew up eating large portions of meals and 90% carbohydrates foods. Rice, eba, Agege bread, oily soup and stew etc. I know adjusting to a new life style might take sometime but its really worth it. Thank God for changes in my body. It feels amazing. MissB

    1. Morning luv, yes pap contains carbs. Its made from maize. Its good carbs cus its nutritious. Just take in moderation and use honey to sweeten. Enjoy.

    1. Hi dear, thanks a lot, i appreciate you even if your a silent reader i love you all the same. Lol. Okpa is higly nutritious. Its high in proteins. Its good but don't make it with too much oil biko, its tasty all the same. And remember moderation is key. Choi! i love okpa, it reminds me of those days in UNN. hahaha!

  6. I had to travel n I avnt skipped in 4 days (starting to feel lyk i'm going to drown) , the gud news is that every time I try to eat extra my stomach feels horrible, cnt believe I cnt eat a full plate of rice anymore! So glad that I can now control my portions!

  7. Carbs r my undoing, I lose my resolve one I see crust be it pastry, pizza, bread. Dont care about d middle, just gimme d crust.
